GoRuck Challenge

Dear Rail Riders,

I wanted to provide you with a quick review of your X-treme Adventure Pants.  I purchased these pants a while ago to use for a GoRuck Challenge (GRC).  I trained in them for a few months before my event.  I liked the quality and the durability of the pants and felt confident I had made the right choice.  The GRC I did was the St. Patrick’s Day 10 pm class in Chicago, IL.  Our event ran from 10 pm – 8 am the next day and we covered 15 miles.  The temperatures were below freezing.  The classes are limited in size (usually 30) so as to get everyone to work as a team.  In our case, we had a class of less than 20.

GoRuck Clip…looks pretty tough

During these events you do a variety of physically challenging tasks.  Common among them are bear crawls, low crawls through the mud, lunges, pushups, buddy carries, and carrying a log.  These are but a few of the fun things GoRuck has teams doing.  All of this is done while moving most of the time at a slow jog and while carrying a ruck on your back filled with 40 lbs of bricks.

I found your pants held up nicely.  I found no rips or tears when I was done. The deep pockets were great when stuffing gloves and other items in and out of them based on what task or “mission” we were performing.  I didn’t worry about losing anything either because of their depth.  I found the side pocket zippers to be easily accessed even with gloves on.  They did not come open given the stress I was putting on them.  I wore a merino wool base layer that kept me warm.  What was great is that the wool help to keep me dry and even though I was sweating the whole time, your pants did not retain the moisture and quickly dried.  I was more than pleased with how well they held up.

I will buy your products in the future.  In fact, I have 3 more GoRuck events coming up.  I plan on buying some of your shorts, unless, by chance, you want me to field test some of those for you? I will gladly punish myself again and give you feedback on your products in the future if you so desire.

If you would like to contact me in the future for anything, feel free to do so.  Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.

- Jeff

In RailRiders We Trust

Screen shot 2012-12-22 at 4.51.35 PMSeth Bewer sent us the following love letter and photo: As an avid outdoor lover and long- distance hiker, my RailRiders Eco-Mesh pants and Madison River shirt have taken me from Georgia to Maine on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike of over 2,000 miles, as well as subsequent thru-hikes of the New England Trail and the Vermont Long Trail. When I only have the clothes on my back to wear everyday for months at a time, I trust RailRiders to deliver a comfortable and long lasting piece of equipment for any outdoor pursuit.”

Greetings from Baja

Nancy Rassiga-Tripp writes: ” Hi!  I bought the women’s Eco-Mesh shirt a few years ago, and have been absolutely wowed by it! I use it both as a sun-guard shirt and a wind-shirt. Mostly to now I’ve worn it in Baja, Mexico, when it is so hot, but I want my arms protected.  It’s been on whale-watching adventures with me, as well as recently on a kayak-camping-hiking adventure, again in Baja.  It is never too hot when I use it to protect as a sun screen, and always works when I use it as a wind screen. It really does everything you describe in the catalog – one of the best investments I’ve ever made…my husband has the male version! Thank you!”

Caribbean Jammin’

Robert Zerillo writes: “Wanted to drop you a line about how I live out of my Jammin’ Shorts.  I wore them every day on my recent cruise to the Southern Caribbean.  We snorkeled, kayaked, hiked, and went sailing for 7 days.  The penultimate adventure, though, was going on the 12 metre Regatta in Philipsburg, St. Maarten.  We sailed on Dennis Conner’s S/V Stars and Stripes (US-55) and beat the butts of the Canadian vessel.  My Jammin’ Shorts were perfect  for the day!  In fact, I even got to captain the vessel after our win. That’s a photo of me behind the wheel in my Jammin’Shorts.  The perfect end to the perfect vacation wearing the perfect clothing.  No matter what I put  them through, my Jammin Shorts are durable, long-wearing and extraordinarily comfortable.  I even use them as my swimming suit at the local pool because they dry out within minutes after I get out of the water.  Keep up your good work and I’ll keep buying your products!”

Botswana Watering Hole

Dale Easley writes: “I just returned from two weeks in Botswana with a group of students from the University of Dubuque where I am a geology professor.  My X-treme Adventure Pants were my go-to outfit, as was my Explorer Shirt.  In the attached photo, I am at Elephant Sands, a great spot to drink a beer and watch elephants after a night camping in the bush.  We had elephants and hyenas around our tents near a watering hole.”

Biking in RailRiders — Going the Distance

Leave the lycra bike tops home!

Long-distance cyclist Terry Habeger, 67, writes: “I love my RailRiders Adventure Top Eco-Mesh shirts. They were my constant companions as I crossed the U.S. in four stages in 2007,08,09 and 2010.  I rode this bike fully loaded from Astoria, Oregon to Bar Harbor, Maine. There was hardly a day without my RailRider Shirts as I pedalled the 4,649 miles in a total of 75 days. They were the envy of touring bikers I met along the
way, looking and feeling incredibly comfortable and different than the typical ‘biker’ shirt. The shirts performed admirably, enduring intense heat, sweat, road grime and the wear and tear of setting up camp on a daily basis. They gushed with ‘thank yous’ for the occasional rinsing out. These tops will forever be my mainstay as I continue to do a lengthy adventure tour every year.  This past summer they experienced the circumnavigation of Lake Superior.”

“Love Your Adventure Tops, RailRiders!”

Eric Marcano, of San Antonio, Texas, writes: “I wore your RailRiders Adventure Tops on two trips this year and I can’t say enough good things about them.  The protected me from the harsh sun while in the Lost Creek Wilderness in Colorado and managed to stay dry and comfortable during fluctuating temperatures I encountered along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.  The material is soft,  yet nearly bombproof and dried quickly after a quick rinse.   Best of all, I looked great on the trail!  At times, I even felt overdressed.”

Chasing the Silver Ghost in the Equator-HT Shirt

Jeff Wynn writes: "I’ve just returned from a bonefish trip, in the Bahamas, and would like to compliment RailRiders on the performance and comfort of the Equator-HT shirt. In my humble opinion, its features make this the ultimate flats fishing shirt. The lightweight fabric, mesh panels, four-button front and easy access zippered pockets combine to make it a very practical and comfortable shirt for those long, blistering days on the bonefish flats. From this day forward, this will be my shirt of choice when chasing the silver ghost! This RailRiders Fan Likes Playing the Escalante Slots

Adventure junkie Doug White writes, “There’s just not much more important than having ‘No BS’ gear when you’re in places that you can’t predict.  No matter how beautiful the place is, getting thrashed and scuffed up, sunburned, wet, hot or cold will make it less enjoyable.  Think about it.  It could suck if things went south on you and your clothes shredded up.  I mean, when you can’t rely on the conditions or even terrain conditions, having stuff that works reliably in many conditions, well, that just makes sense.  This RailRiders clothing rocks. It’s definitely ‘No BS’ gear, and I have come to depend on the stuff.

I just returned from my Fall excursion into the slot canyons of the Escalante River {in south-central Utah}  That place is high on my list of spectacular and unexplored backcountry.  I had the time of my life of slithering through some remote slots in a real ‘off-the-beaten-path’ area. I wore the same set of RailRiders shirt and pants for days, and as long as you didn’t have to smell me up close and personal, I looked fairly descent, thank you very much.  That shirt and pants took one helluva beating, but they stayed together perfectly.  Anyway, thanks for making products that I can count on and be relatively confident that I will return to civilization in fully clothed.”

The Raptor is Coming!

Karen Stubenvoll MD writes, “I’m a raptor-banding assistant at Hawk Ridge in Duluth, MN. It’s important to wear clothing with no buttons around the mist nets where we capture our hawks for banding. So I was thrilled to discover the RailRiders Eco Mesh shirt — no buttons, great ventilation, long sleeves to avoid sunburn. Here is a photo of the shirt and me with a red-tailed hawk. I also love the Weatherpants. RailRiders — my favorite clothing brand for raptor banding!”

Love Letter from an “Adventure-Seeking” Gal

Terry writes: “I am standing by one of the many Vintage Autos that come and show at our Events. I was cool, comfortable, and sun and bug-free e thanks to my new RailRiders wardrobe.  For this event, I chose my Eco-Mesh Pants, in a men’s medium, and my Equator-HT Top, in men’s small. Being  ‘on station all day in the sun makes what you wear of utmost importance. I need to be able move freely and quickly, rubbing and dragging myself over many terrains, whether putting out a flag to inform drivers of track conditions, or hurling myself over the concrete safety barriers, to run to the aide of a car/driver in trouble, and in immediate need.  My clothes must be non-restrictive, and strong! My RailRiders go with me most everywhere….from my sailboat on The Great South Bay to Auto Racing Tracks in the North East. What I like best about my Eco-Mesh Pants is that I can adjust the amount of ventilation, so in the early mornings and late afternoon, I can zip up for less venting, yet open up mid-day when it gets hot. Even if I make a mess of my pants or shirt, a quick trip to the ladies room and a run under the water and a short stop under the hand dryer, I am ready for the apres-race dinner party looking good and feeling fresh. Thank you for making such great products for all of us Adventure Seeking Guys and Gals!”

Eco-Mesh Shirt Survived Thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail…

Ryley B writes: “I just wanted to send you guys a note about the Eco-Mesh shirt. The one in the picture made it 3000 miles of hiking – all of the Pacific Crest Trail and the first 400 miles of the Continental Divide Trail. Eventually the ridiculous amount of bushwhacking I’ve done in it tore it to shreds, but it took a hell of a beating before giving up. Really, in the pic it just looks a bit dirty (no surprise since I had just worn it for 5 days straight). In the deserts of Southern California, it performed like a champ, keeping me as cool as I imagine is possible in 100+ degree heat. Since then, I’ve stuck with it through all kinds of weather and it has never let me down. I especially love that it keeps the bugs off me even while keeping me cool. No other shirt I’ve owned can manage that feat.”

Smooth Sailing in the BVI’s

Rita writes: “Here is a picture of myself at the helm of a Dufour Gibsea 46 in Tortola, BVI this January 2011.  It was my first sailing trip there and I wore my Oasis Shirt all the time.  I got lots of really dirty dirt on the sleeve when I had to help feed the anchor chain into the holding area but it cleaned up like a dream!  I will wear it often this year and my new shirt and Capris!”

Snorkeling in St. John… the RailRiders Way

David Sandoval sent us the following photo and email after a “deep-see” vacation in the Caribbean: “The RailRiders Eco-Mesh shirt was an integral part of helping me explore St John, USVI comfortably. I used it for cross-island hiking and even snorkeling! I was sunburned badly on the first day of my trip after a three-hour snorkel around Waterlemon Cay, and was sidelined from further snorkeling. Refusing to give up on the magnificent snorkeling St John has to offer, I remembered my Eco-Mesh shirt was rated 30 UPF and gave it a shot. It worked! I was able to spend several more days gathering once in a lifetime memories. Thanks!”
